Our History

GLOCOM will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2021. GLOCOM will continue to contribute to the evolution of the information society through new intellectual collaborations across different fields of expertise, working together with people in both industry and government communities.

1991
Established in July, with Yasusuke Murakami as the first director.
1993
Shumpei Kumon appointed as Director.
Promotion of Internet dissemination activities, demonstrating the possibilities of the Internet and supporting the connection to kantei.co.jp
1994
Opening of www.glocom.ac.jp
Starting to disseminate information on research results to the world through the GLOCOM website, as one of the first organizations from Japan
Inauguration of IECP (Intellectual Enterprise Collaboration Program)
Through its activities, it aimed to serve as a guideline for future corporate activities and industrial policies, based on the concept of collaboration between “Intelprise” and Enterprise. (-2008)
1995
Formation of the Information and Telecommunications Policy Study Group.
Gathered experts in Japan to study the state of Japan’s information and communications policy, and published nine proposals by March 1996.
1997
Establishment of CAN (Community Area Network) Forum.
The CAN Forum was established to promote the creation of an information network from within the community as a starting point for the revitalization and informatization of the community.
1999
Presentation of policy recommendations by the Year 2000 Problem Study Group (July).
2000
Launch of an international information dissemination platform.
It was created with the aim of providing a place to communicate issues related to Japan on the Web in English and to interact freely with experts from Japan and abroad.
Inauguration of the i-civil Research Group
The i-civil Research Group was established as a forum for the interdisciplinary exchange of opinions to build an information sociology. Later, it lead to the establishment of the Japan Society for Information Sociology.
2001
10th Anniversary GLOCOM Forum (November) “Clues to the Revival of Japan: Beyond the Clash of Civilizations.”
2003
Set up Creative Commons Japan (CCJP) Preparatory Committee as a host.
Worked on translating the Creative Commons licenses into Japanese and reconciling them with Japanese law.
Japan’s largest elementary school website contest “J-KIDS Grand Prize” started.
Focused on the role of school websites, and carried out activities for their comprehensive evaluation and support. (-2013)
2004
ised@glocom (Interdisciplinary Studies on Ethics and Design of information Society) Activities
A new type of research activity in which young researchers discuss the complementary issues of ethics and design that are important for the future of the information society. (-2006)
2006
Akira Miyahara appointed as Director
Regional SNS Study Group Established
A study group to analyze the current status of diversifying regional social networking services, and to explore the possibility of regional SNS in the future through discussions with various people.
CTO Roundtable held
CTOs (Chief Technology Officers) of Japanese companies gathered to deliver messages on IT policy and science and technology policy. (-2010)
2007
Start of the Innovation Behavioral Science Project
Theoretical and practical research to create a better society by scientifically elucidating the behavior of people and organizations for innovation. (-2014)
2009
Launch of ERP (Executive Research Program)
A new program was launched for companies and organizations that support the overall activities of GLOCOM.
2010
GSN (Global Strategy Network) 2010 Implementation
A complex of international conferences, special lectures, training programs, and other related events organized by an international network of global strategy researchers.
2011
Ceremony held to commemorate the 20th anniversary (November)
FTM (Future Technology Management) Forum Activities
An industry-academia joint program of research and practice for future technology and society to “envision a smart society in Japan.” (-2013)
2012
Jiro Shono appointed as Director
Copyright Laboratory “COLABORA” website launched
Collaboration with CCJP and MIAU to consider a wide range of themes and professional perspectives on how “copyright” should be in an age where connections create new value.
Game Industry Research Association established.
Created as a place for practical research involving the industry, government and academia, considering games as an industry.
2013
Start of Innovation Nippon activities
In collaboration with Google, discussions and research on the direction of legal systems, industrial development, deregulation, and business practices from a “pro-innovation” standpoint.
Launched a research project on dementia-friendly urban development
The project was launched as a new form of research to tackle a social theme that transcends sectors and generations.
2014
First time ranked in the “World’s Top Think Tanks”
The University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civic Organizations Program (TTCDP) announced that GLOCOM was ranked 31st in the world in the Science & Technology category of the “World’s Top Think Tanks” for the first time.
2015
Establishment of Platform Research Group
Newly established as a research division for collective intelligence research and consensus building science.
China Strategy Research Group GLOCOM China Strategy Forum started
Started as a joint research project to consider corporate strategy in the global era.
Start of the “View of the World” series of contents for corporations
The “View of the World” series of seminars and workshops on advanced themes of the information society was launched.
2016
Toru Maegawa appointed as Director
Blockchain Economic Research Lab established
Promotes research on the social and economic impact of the application of blockchain technology.
2017
GLOCOM Roppongi Council (https://roppongi-kaigi.org/) established
GLOCOM’s first patent application (trend prediction system using correlation models)
Better Disaster Response project started through data utilization and collaboration between industry, government, academia and the private sector
2018
Start of Creativity Research in Digital Society
Launch of creativity research as a new innovation process in the changing relationship between individuals and organizations
2019
